a5c7b9f00b Sergeant Todd (Russell) is a veteran soldier for the an elite group of the armed forces of Earth. After being defeated by a new breed of genetically engineered soldiers, he is dumped on a waste planet and left for dead. He soon interacts with a group of crash survivors who lead out a peaceful existence on the planet. The peace is soon brokenthe new breed of soldiers lands to eliminate the colony, which Sergeant Todd must defend. In a futuristic society, some people are selected at birth to become soldiers, and trained in such a manner that they become inhuman killing machines. One of the most succesfull and older of these soldiers (Russell) is pitted against a new breed of soldiers, and after the confrontation is believed to be dead. His body is left behind in a semi-abandoned colonial planet, where everything is peaceful, and he is taught about the other aspects of life. But eventually he has to fight the new breed of soldiers again, this time to defend his new home… 1998's Soldier is a science fiction action film written by David Webb Peoples. For those unaware, Peoples co-wrote Blade Runner and Twelve Monkeys, and scripted Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, among several other credits. The writer actually considers Soldier to be a spiritual cousin to Blade Runner, and a "side-quel" since it takes place in the same filmic universe. However, Soldier is also directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (not to be confused with Paul Thomas Anderson), a director who likes to make trashy action flicks and who gets a lot of flack for his efforts. Hence, while Peoples' script might have been more substantive at some stage, the end result is merely an entertaining action film with a few nice ideas, and it works in that sense. To the credit of Peoples and Anderson, Soldier takes its time to build the characters and observe Toddhe struggles to ingratiate himself into a more peaceful culture. Peoples' script has a number of things on its mind, exploring if it's possible for a lifelong killing machine to assimilate themselves back into society.Anderson gets a lot of hate for his movies, but he knows how to construct fluid and exciting action scenes. The fight choreography here is solid, and the gun battles are bad-ass. When Todd cuts loose and sets out to eliminate his opponents, Soldier is insanely entertaining.Russell was handed a tough task in portraying Todd. Although the star is on-screen practically all the time, he only says about 100 words throughout the entire movie. Instead of using words to convey his character's feelings, Russell had to do all the heavy lifting with facial expressions and body language. And he pulls it off beautifully. It's a terrifically nuanced performance, showing that Russell is a better actor than he gets credit for. Also in the cast is Isaacs, who essentially plays a cartoonish, moustache-twirling villain. It's a cheesy role, but Isaacs seems to be in the right spirit. Gary Busey is herewell, showing us why every movie can benefit from a touch of Busey.unfortunately, the film was a box office disaster, grossing less than $15 million at the domestic box office and predominantly going straight-to-video in the rest of the world. The critics used ita punching bag, well. But it matters not. As longyou can accept the movie for what it is, it's a blast. So, this really is another tip for "worst movie ever" award. I had no idea what to expect when I hit my local CINEMA (no simple "get that video"). I was late and so I decided from the posters around that "Star Force Soldier" (German TITLE!!!) might be a nice Sci-Fi action thing… it really sounded like Starship Troopers to me, making it a nice try. The first minutes, Kurt being replaced, really had some slight fascination, but after this, things got worse, to put it in a nice way. The FX might be a matter of taste, I personally thought I could create more action by filming my old StarWars action figures. The characters were all stereotypes, there were no signs that they MIGHT be individuals. And talking about characters: DONT TRUST ANYONE telling you Mr. Russell did good acting in this movie. As mentioned many times, Russell does hardly speak. And to express his feelings, there are always slowmotion parts, combined with shots of his eyes… this is acting?!?!?! My fridge is better in impersonating a penguin. There is only one way I can explain all these flashbacks in the movie: The production team gathered around a table, when suddenly a member detected that the film was only about 60 mins. So, someone brought up the idea to show the whole film twice, but was convinced to put in these flashbacks to stretch it to about 100 mins. Talking about action: This movie isnt an ACTION film at all. It is a film with SOME ACTION scenes. All you fans: take a watch and count the action scenes. You´d be suprised. Or maybe you MADE it an action film with FastFoward… that would be an option. How can things like this pass test screenings?!? I never saw the movie "Braindead", but this word really made its way into my mind during the whole film. In the German version, they even cut the scene when Kurtie fights the really mean, bad, evil soldier at the end…. so, this makes a no content, no violence film.

I have never been that frustrated leaving a cinema and I have seen quite a lot of ****, but this one was an insult. I could nearly see the producers ROTFLOLing cause they grabbed my bucks with a product they should have paid ME for to see it.
